Statement

Focussing mostly on landscapes and the urban environment, my work explores the themes of memory and imagination. I describe my work as 'quiet photography' because I wish to create images that speak softly to, rather than shout aggressively at, viewers. I see my photographs as meditations on the character and poetry of particular places, situations and moments.

I often discover my subjects by accident while out walking in the countryside or around the city; wandering with an open mind I am often drawn instinctively to abandoned, decaying buildings or to specific details within the landscape that might otherwise be overlooked and ignored by casual passers-by. Although there are no people in my photographs, human activity and its impact upon the landscape is often alluded to. Much of my work evokes an aura of mystique, inviting multiple interpretations and encouraging viewer's to use their imaginations to weave their own narratives.

Besides working in a documentary style I am also interested in using the camera to capture painterly effects. I often experiment with different lighting and atmospheric conditions but deliberately avoid digital manipulation; presenting only what is captured by the camera's lens. Throughout my work I aim to create evocative and engaging images, which invite contemplation and stimulate viewers imaginations.
